Medellín, Colombia – May 2025

In May 2025, the Salsero of the Month section on the Latina Stereo website from Medellín, Colombia, is dedicated to a Puerto Rican musician from the town of Isabela, located in the northwest region of the island: the great musician, arranger, and pianist Luis R. Quevedo Alfaro. Although he is no longer with us, his musical legacy—spanning more than half a century—ensures that he will always be remembered for his immense talent.

Born in 1947, Luis Quevedo studied chemical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, but he never pursued that profession. What truly captivated him was music. He also studied at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, where he specialized in piano performance. There, he was a classmate of trumpet maestro Orlando Pabellón.

Quevedo began studying classical music during childhood, but he ultimately devoted himself to popular music. Although he also played trumpet and vibraphone, the piano was his true passion. His professional career began in 1972 with the group Latin Tempo, led by arranger, musical director, producer, composer, tres and cuatro player Louis García Blasco.

Luis Quevedo’s first musical arrangement was for Cuban singer Justo Betancourt, specifically on the track Distinto y Diferente, recorded for Fania Records and featured on the album of the same name, released in 1977.

Maestro Quevedo’s extensive career in salsa included roles as pianist and arranger for many of the leading figures and groups in our musical culture, such as: Andrés Jiménez, Babo Jiménez y su Banda, Bobby Valentín, Cheo Feliciano, Conjunto Canayon, Descarga Boricua, Frankie Hernández y su Orquesta, Gunda Merced y su Salsa Fever, Ismael Miranda, Jesús Cepeda y su Grupo ABC, Johnny El Bravo, José Nogueras, Julio Castro y su Orquesta La Masacre, Junior Toledo y Guillo Rivera Orquesta, Kim de los Santos, Latin Tempo, Luigi Texidor, Mario Ortiz y su Orquesta, Marvin Santiago, Orlando Pabellón, Osvaldo Valentín, Paquito Guzmán, Puerto Rico All-Stars, Ramón Rodríguez y su Grupo 344, Roberto Roena, Roberto y su Nuevo Montuno, Rubby Haddock, Sammy González, Tabaco y sus Metales, Tito Allen, Willie Colón, and Willie Rosario, among many others.

With the rise of romantic salsa in the 1980s, Quevedo also made significant contributions to the genre, recording with a host of musicians and singers, including: Anthony Cruz, Celenia, Conjunto Chaney, Edgar Joel, Héctor Rey, Héctor Tricoche, Luisito Carrión, Maelo Ruiz, Mario Feliciano, Max Torres, Mimi Ibarra, Pedro Arroyo, Pedro Conga, Pupy Santiago, Tito Gómez, Tony Vega, Vianca, Willie Crespo, and Willie González.

A very special chapter in Luis Quevedo’s career was his work with the beloved “Gallo Salsero,” singer Tito Rojas from Humacao. Quevedo participated in nine of his albums: El Campesino (recorded with Pablito Paredes’s ensemble), and eight more with Tito Rojas’s own orchestra: Sensual, A Mi Estilo…, Por Derecho Propio, Pal Pueblo, Alegrías y Penas, Navidad Con Tito Rojas (Canta Gallo, Canta), Rompiendo Noches—all under the Musical Productions label—and …Peleando Duro, released by Envidia.

Quevedo also recorded five albums with Frankie Ruiz, the singer raised in Mayagüez. His remarkable collaborations extend to Ángel “Cachete” Maldonado and Batacumbele, Cándido and the Super Estrellas, Edwin Colón Zayas, Endel Dueño, Frank Ferrer, Los Hijos de los Célebres, Plena Libre, Puerto Rican Folkloric Jazz, and Valentín Valdés. He also had the opportunity to accompany major international and Puerto Rican artists such as Lucecita Benítez, Sophy, Chucho Avellanet, Danny Rivera, Marco Antonio Muñiz, and Tavín Pumarejo. Most notably, he had the honor of performing with the world-renowned Plácido Domingo.

Trumpet maestro Orlando Pabellón of Juncos shared his memories of his colleague and fellow musician Luis Quevedo:

“Luis and I studied together at the conservatory in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Though he had studied engineering, he never practiced it. I remember him as an excellent pianist—he must have recorded on hundreds of sessions. He loved playing the acoustic wooden piano. I had the privilege of working with him on my album ‘Una Aventura Más,’ which featured a group of incredible musicians. He was such a pleasant, jovial person—elegant in his demeanor and truly a professional. He always had a story to tell or a joke to share… I hold dear memories of him. He was an extraordinary human being.”

Another great Puerto Rican musician, Louis García Blasco, had this to say:

“Luis was a brilliant man and an exceptional sight-reader—one of the qualities that made him truly great. He had a noble heart, but what impressed most was his intellect. No matter what he chose to do in life, he would have excelled. Talking to him on any topic felt like attending a master class.”

Luis Quevedo left behind a vast musical legacy, which we aim to showcase through this tribute to his artistic career. Here, we present a timeline of his life in music and a discography that includes at least 145 albums—each one bearing the mark of the unforgettable pianist from Isabela, who passed away on May 27, 2012, at the age of 65. Through his music, he will live forever in our hearts.

From this, our website www.latinastereo.com,, we dedicate this work to the memory of the great maestro… Luis Quevedo Alfaro.
